Hello Streetsville!
Streetsville’s charm comes from its people. Several generations of creative, interesting, and hard-working people have made our community what it is today. Our heritage sites are part of what sets our neighbourhood apart, and we support preserving them for the generations to come.
So why we are calling on the community to oppose the Streetsville Heritage Conservation District (HCD) Plan, and how does it affect you?
- Significantly reduce the changes you can make to your home (read stories from other HCDs here)
- It’ll make your life more expensive (higher home insurance, more expensive + longer renovations)
- Add levels of bureaucracy and red tape to maintaining your home
- And much more!
What is the Streetsville HCD Plan?
The Streetsville HCD plan is a proposal by the City of Mississauga to designate most of Streetsville as a ‘Heritage Conservation District’. This is meant to recognize and protect heritage sites from being torn down or renovated such that they lose their heritage charm. This would preserve places like the iconic Streetsville United Church.
But the Streetsville HCD plan goes much further than just protecting heritage sites. The plan includes major government overreach that strips you of your property rights, even if your home is not considered ‘heritage’.
How Will this Affect Me?
If you live within the Streetsville HCD, you will now need to pay for costly Heritage Impact Assessments from private certified consultants, and apply for City of Mississauga approval if you would like to make changes to your property, such as:
- Design of your home’s exterior, including which paint colours or materials that you can use.
- Changes to windows and doors
- Landscaping
- Removal of, or building of any additions to your home
- Placement of exterior heating or cooling systems, or adding solar panels
- and much more (click here for a more detailed breakdown)
The City of Mississauga does not need to strip you of your property rights in order to protect housing!
What Can you do to Stop This?
